TF1 pays tribute to Jean-Pierre Pernaut after his death in the 8 p.m. news

TELEVISION – Three decades at 1 p.m. on TF1, a touching goodbye at 8 p.m. The television channel began the 8 p.m. news on Wednesday March 2 with a short tribute to its presenter, Jean-Pierre Pernaut, who died in the afternoon. The presenter Julien Arnaud sent, on behalf of the channel, his thoughts to loved ones of his former colleague. He also announced the holding of a special edition dedicated in the face of 1 p.m. on TF1 after the newspaper and before the broadcast of a documentary on his career.

Aged 71, Jean-Pierre Pernaut died of a lung cancer, of which he had declared be reached last November. The sad news was announced by his wife’s agent Nathalie Marquay-Pernaut to AFP this afternoon: “Tom, Lou, Olivier and Julia’s father died of lung cancer”.

“Immense sadness”

“The emotion is very strong on this set”, declares Julien Arnaud to introduce the special edition devoted to Jean-Pierre Pernaut. After a very complete 8 p.m. newscast, the presenter welcomed Évelyne Dhéliat, the general manager of TF1 Gilles Pélisson, Michel Izard, close to Jean-Pierre Penaut and great reporter on TF1, but also Marie-Sophie Laccarau, who resumed on 1 p.m. from TF1 after the departure of “JPP”.

The boss of the channel confided his “tremendous sadness”. “The whole big family of TF1 is affected. When you see it on the screen, it’s hard to believe it”, breathes Gilles Pélisson, who also sent his thoughts to the family of the late journalist.

The weather presenter on the front page, Évelyne Dhélia, said that “Jean-Pierre was the same in life” as on television. He “was the life, and it transpired in his diaries”. “He was a star against his will,” said his friend and colleague Michel Izard.

A “benevolent” man

Marie Sophie Laccarau also spoke, her voice trembling with emotion: “He was a benevolent man. I took over from him in a unique way, we worked for months together. And Jean-Pierre Pernaut did not give advice, he shared. I will never thank him enough for this support”.

Jean-Pierre Pernaut had withdrawn from the news on December 18, 2020, when he was at the height of his audiences and his popularity. The last newspaper presented by “JPP” had gathered more than 8.1 million viewers, its audience record since August 2007.

The septuagenarian had however remained active on “JPP TV”, an online platform to offer regional subjects created by TF1, and present on the LCI news channel (TF1 group) a weekly program called “Jean-Pierre et vous”. In 2021, he also created a paper magazine, called “At the heart of the regions”.
