In the last test before the summer break against Colombia, Ilkay Gündogan should finally play. The triple champion enjoys great respect from his teammates in the DFB selection.
In the midst of the sporting crisis, the return of the treble winner for the German national soccer team comes at the right time.
Ilkay Gündogan is a player who “absolutely helps every team and therefore also us,” said Robin Gosens before the last test match of the DFB selection before the summer break on Tuesday (8.45 p.m. / RTL) against Colombia. “We all followed what Ilkay did this season.”
In the Champions League final, Gosens (28) suffered with Inter Milan – Gündogan (32) won 1-0 with Manchester City against the Italian club. Both professionals traveled to the DFB selection last Wednesday. In contrast to Gosens, who played for one half in the 0-1 draw against Poland, Gündogan was rested by national coach Hansi Flick.
Anticipation for Gündogan
“We’re glad we have him,” said DFB sporting director Rudi Völler. Gündogan is looking forward to the game in his native city of Gelsenkirchen. “He will definitely put in a top performance,” said Völler. Flick announced early on that Gündogan would play. The 3: 3 in Bremen against the Ukraine and the defeat in Warsaw without the midfielder had worsened the mood around the DFB selection again.
“He’s a very important player who comes here with a lot of confidence because of the season he played and his club played,” said Gosens. “Also with a great deal of security in his game. Such players are good for every team.” With the Cityzens, Gündogan also won the English championship and the FA Cup as captain of coach Pep Guardiola’s star selection. The national player decided the cup final in a 2-1 win against city rivals Manchester United with two goals.
“If he manages to contribute here, and he manages to do that, he has proven that in the past, then he is a huge added value as a leader, as a very experienced player, as a player who has won a lot in his career, and as a player, who also had to deal with defeats,” said Gosens.
