In Pakistan there are repeated attacks on helpers and security forces during vaccination campaigns against polio. Now five police officers have been killed.

In At least five police officers have been killed by a bomb during a polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan. More than twenty other people, mainly security forces, were injured, a police spokesman told the German Press Agency. In Pakistan there are repeated attacks, sometimes fatal, on vaccination workers and the security forces who protect them. Polio vaccinations are seen by some Islamist militants as a Western tool to sterilize Muslims.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are among the few countries where new infections with the pathogen are still occurring. Pakistan is also struggling with a strengthening of the Pakistani Taliban, who are carrying out attacks particularly in the border region with Afghanistan. According to the police spokesman, the attack on the vaccination teams took place in the northwest of the country near the Afghan border. The bomb exploded near a vehicle on the side of the road.
