The Russians are familiar with terror: Hundreds of people have died in various attacks in the country in the past. The attack near Moscow on a concert hall with more than 130 deaths on Friday brings to mind previous events with many victims – such as the bombings of residential buildings in 1999, the hostage-taking in Beslan and a Moscow theater, attacks on airports and subways.
The attacks often gave Russian politicians an opportunity to restructure the state and show strength and toughness. Our photo series shows you some examples.
