Tensions in the Red Sea, amoxicillin deliveries and Sweden very close to NATO

Did you miss the news this morning? We have put together a summary to help you see things more clearly.

The conflict in Gaza continues to spill over into the Red Sea. In a period of “approximately 10 hours”, the US military on Tuesday shot down “12 attack drones, 3 anti-ship ballistic missiles and 2 cruise missiles in the southern Red Sea, fired by the Houthis », a Yemeni rebel group in solidarity with Palestinian Hamas. Since the start of the war on October 7 between Hamas and Israel, the Houthis have, according to the Pentagon, already launched around a hundred drone and missile attacks, targeting a total of 10 merchant ships involving more than 35 countries.

Last Friday, the White House accused Iran of being “very involved in the planning” of these attacks which threaten to disrupt the flow of global maritime trade on this strategic route. This situation pushed the United States to set up a multinational maritime protection force in the Red Sea.

The return of amoxicillin to pharmacies is approaching. The Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) wanted to reassure on Tuesday in the face of supply tensions for this very common antibiotic, which has become rare since this fall. “Boxes of amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid are being delivered to wholesale distributors, who will ensure equitable distribution of them throughout the territory,” writes the ANSM in a press release.

The authorities thus hope not to relive the situation of a year ago. Last winter, France experienced a particularly severe shortage of certain medications, including amoxicillin, which was very difficult to find for many weeks, particularly in its version for children.

Ankara is preparing to put an end to a suspense which lasted nineteen months. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament approved on Tuesday the text authorizing Sweden’s accession to NATO. The body transmitted it to the Plenary Assembly for final adoption, a formality which should follow in the coming hours or days but at a time – or date – which has not yet been specified.

Turkey was the last member of the Atlantic Alliance with Hungary to block Sweden’s path, multiplying demands and pretexts to justify its reluctance. A decision immediately welcomed by Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström: “We are delighted to become a member of NATO,” he declared to the public television site SVT Nyheter.
