A collective has in any case been mounting pressure for several months on elected officials and the population to try to thwart the creation of this reception center for asylum seekers (Cada). This Saturday at 2 p.m., these opponents, some of whom are close to the far right, are planning a new demonstration in front of the town hall of the seaside resort. The presence of the MEP Reconquête Gilbert Collardpresented as “the godfather” of this movement, is announced.
But the project also garners a certain number of supporters, who also wish to be heard. Saturday morning, supporters will meet at 10 a.m., including representatives of the Loire-Atlantique department. “In solidarity with Yannick Morez, mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, his municipal team and all the people who support this project, I strongly condemn the threats and despicable acts of intimidation of which they are the target, ”wrote the president (PS) Michel Ménard in a press release. The League for Human Rights indicates that it has filed a complaint following the distribution of a leaflet entitled “Protect our children”. A third rally, organized by the anti-fascist collective of Pays-de-Retz, is also planned for the afternoon.
Located near a school
In 2016, already, the town had experienced tensions following the decision to create a place of accommodation for migrants after the dismantling of the Calais jungle. This time, it is the choice of location for this new Cada (which is to replace the old center), near the public nursery and elementary school Pierre-Attelée, which would pose a particular problem. About sixty housing units are to be built in premises adjoining the establishment. “We are opposed to the arrival of these asylum seekers,” writes the National Rally. He is asking for a local referendum on this project piloted by the State but for which the sale of land was unanimously approved by the municipal council.
