Another large demonstration against right-wing extremism is currently taking place in Hamburg. The climate movement “Fridays For Future” (FFF) and around 40 other associations and organizations called for the rally.
Tens of thousands of participants gathered at lunchtime on Edmund-Siemers-Allee at Dammtor train station. In total, around 30,000 people were registered for the demonstration under the motto “We are the firewall – together against right-wing extremism”. For the organizers, every single person counts, said Annika Kruse from FFF NDR 90.3: “I always find it special when you see a large crowd of people standing up for a topic – and I think that every single person, who goes to the demonstration here is already making a big statement.” The demonstrators held placards with slogans such as “Solidarity is our motto”, “Germany remains colorful” and “I am against right-wing extremism”.
Broad alliance demonstrated
As with the previous demonstrations against right-wing extremism in Hamburg, the field of participants is diverse. The Jusos, the Green Youth, the Grandmas Against the Right, the ADFC bicycle association and numerous other associations and organizations are also taking part in the demo. The protest is also directed against the AfD. “Fridays For Future” accuses the party of dividing society and threatening coexistence. The party has been shifting debates to the right and dividing society for years, according to the call for the demonstration. That’s why the loud majority is called upon to stand up for democracy.
Speeches and appearance by Deichkind
At the beginning there were speeches, including from transformation researcher Maja Göpel, political scientist Katharina Nocun and the head of the Hamburg Neuengamme concentration camp memorial, Oliver von Wrochem. The band Deichkind and DJ Vize also performed.
Demo moves through the city center
The demonstrators then set off to march through the city center. The route leads through the Karoviertel, over the Jungfernstieg and the Lombardsbrücke back to Edmund-Siemers-Allee. The demo should end there around 6 p.m.
Third major demonstration against right-wing extremism
In Hamburg it is the third major demonstration against right-wing extremism in just a few weeks. At previous events, significantly more people took to the streets than were registered. Demonstrations are also planned in other German cities this weekend. The protests were triggered by revelations by the research network Correctiv about a meeting of right-wing extremists in Potsdam in November. AfD politicians as well as individual members of the CDU and the Values Union also took part.
