Alexander Zverev fended off five match points. But it’s not enough for the final.

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev missed the final at the ATP tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico. After almost four hours of play, the 26-year-old somewhat surprisingly lost to Australian Jordan Thompson 5:7, 6:4 in the semifinals. 6:7 (2:7).

In the marathon encounter, Zverev, who was top seed in the tournament, fended off five match points before the tiebreak of the last set. But after that he couldn’t do anything more, the 29-year-old Australian took his chance.

At the beginning of February, Zverev canceled his participation in the Davis Cup qualifying round in Hungary due to a viral infection. The world number six had already become ill in Melbourne on his way to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and lost there against the Russian Daniil Medvedev. In his first tournament since the forced break, the final stop was also in the semi-finals.

The world number 40. Thompson will face Casper Ruud in his first final on the ATP tour on Sunday. The Norwegian defeated defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece.
