Tennis pro Daniel Altmaier won the German duel with Oscar Otte at the tournament in Madrid and reached the third round.

The 24-year-old from Kempen beat his five-year-old opponent from Cologne 6-4, 7-5 on Friday in 1:42 hours. Altmaier used his fifth match point with an overhead ball and for the first time in his career reached the top 32 in a Masters 1000 tournament. He now meets the winner of the match between qualifier Yannick Hanfmann from Weinheim and Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

Later moved into the main field

Altmaier had actually failed in qualifying at the clay court event. However, he benefited from the cancellation of the seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta, subsequently moved into the main draw and thereby directly into the second round. The German professionals Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff are also in the men’s competition.
