Ten candidates move into the ESC final – including Ukraine

The first big show of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 took place in Turin. Ten of the 17 acts of the first semi-final are now one round further and are in the final on Saturday.

On Tuesday evening, 17 candidates had their first ESC appearance of the season in the PalaOlimpico in Turin. For ten of them, the Eurovision journey continues. They were able to convince the audience and juries and made it to the grand finale.

In addition to the participating countries, Italy and France, as the so-called Big Five countries, were also allowed to vote in the first semi to see which acts made it to the final.

Systur from Iceland and the Portuguese Maro surprise


Calm title in troubled times: Systur sing about the beauty of nature.

The first semi-final offered a diverse show with a musical journey through different styles of music. It was primarily a women’s evening, five soloists and three sisters secured six of the coveted places in the final. That was anything but certain in advance: But Sigríður, Elísabet and Elín Eyþórsdóttir, the Systur from Iceland proved wrong with “Með hækkandi sól”. Also Maro surprised with her progress. In the run-up, only a few could warm to the unexcited contribution. That evening she showed that no one can sing about world pain and longing more beautifully than the Portuguese. The Lithuanian is another strong female voice in the final Monica Liu, S10 from the Netherlands, Amanda Tenfjord from Greece and the Armenian pink linn

Kalush Ochestra thanks Ukraine for its support

Ukraine’s entry into the final was no surprise: Das Kalush Ochestra around frontman Oleh Psiuk was ambassador, beacon of hope and voice of their country all in one that evening. Her song “Stefania” skilfully combined folk sounds with hard hip-hop and breakdance. The sung homage to “Mamo”, the “Mama”, was worthy of the finale. Political messages or symbolism were left out, after the performance Psiuk said: “Thank you for supporting Ukraine.”

Nice train ride with Zdob și Zdub from Moldova. The band from Chisinau sings its way into the final.

Also Zdob și Zdub from neighboring Moldova traveled to the final with their “Trenuleţul”, in English “train”, in good spirits. Equipped with violin and accordion, the band showed a great sense of rhythm. Also with a fun number and a perfectly polished choreography, Norway made it into the final. With their song “Give That Wolf A Banana” wanted Subwoolfer keep the wolf happy so he doesn’t eat the grandmother. The Swiss was also allowed to win a final ticket Marius Bear, who convinced with a simply beautiful stage performance and good singing.

Austria and Denmark did not meet the “Sound of Beauty”.

Certainly among the disappointed of this evening Ronela Hajati from Albania and also the Austrian DJ LUM!X and singer Pia Maria. However, the appearance of the neighbors in particular did not leave a lasting impression. Also Latvia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Denmark didn’t hit the “Sound of Beauty” on this first evening of the show.

25 participants start in the final on Saturday

On Thursday at 9 p.m. in the second semi-final, 18 acts will compete to secure one of the ten remaining starting places for the final. The Big Five countries Germany, France, Great Britain, Spain and of course Italy are already set for the final evening. They carry the main financial burden of the Eurovision Song Contest. Go for Germany Malik Harris with “Rockstars” at the start.
