They have been authorized exceptionally by the city since May 19 to support the gradual reopening of cafes, hotels and restaurants and relaunch their activity after several months of closure. But from this Sunday, the temporary terraces that have sprung up everywhere on the sidewalks in Rennes will have to be dismantled.
When the device was launched, the city announced that it had validated 120 requests for extension or creation of terraces. Cafetiers and restaurateurs now hope that they will be able to reinstall their wooden terraces from spring. Until then, an assessment of the experiment will be drawn to see if the device can be made sustainable.
Barnums banned from January 1
From January 1, all barnums installed in front of cafes and restaurants will also be banned in the Breton capital. The city had made this decision in 2019 for aesthetic reasons, the barnums being accused of “hiding the heritage instead of revealing it”, according to Marc Hervé, the elected official in charge of trade at the time.
This ban took effect from January 1, 2020 but a transition period was granted to certain traders until January 1, 2022 so that they adapt to the new regulations.
