Self-driving cars should soon be available to everyone: Bosch and VW software subsidiary Cariad have joined forces to achieve this goal. What features are planned for vehicles?

Bosch and the VW software subsidiary Cariad want to work together on the development of self-driving cars. A comprehensive partnership has been agreed, as Bosch and Cariad jointly announced on Tuesday in Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.

“Companies want to make partially and highly automated driving suitable for the masses and available to everyone,” it said in a statement. Functions are planned in vehicles from the VW Group where drivers can temporarily take their hands off the steering wheel.

Germany as a location for innovation

Bosch CEO Markus Heyn said solutions could also be offered to other customers of the automotive supplier and electronics group. Cariad’s CEO, Dirk Hilgenberg, said the cooperation would strengthen Germany as a location for innovation.

VW boss Herbert Diess had already spoken about the considerable potential of autonomous driving last July. “Mobility 2030 will be autonomous, digital, smart, sustainable and safe,” said the top manager at the time. This will make traffic safer. VW is the largest car manufacturer in Europe.
