TC Boyle says he loves entertaining. He asks that in conversation with the star under Evidence. Which doesn’t mean that the issues aren’t serious. Apocalyptically serious. As in his new book “Blue Skies”.
The star spoke to the author TC Boyle via video call at his home in Montecito, California. The author sits at a desk, books and notes lie around him like a writer. Smart as a flash, he peeks out from under his oversized baseball cap. His new novel “Blue Skies” was recently published.
Mr. Boyle, what color is your sky right now?
It’s gray outside. I live in a very dry place that has miraculously rained this winter. At this time of year we typically have cloud cover from the sea, sometimes lasting until 2 or 3 p.m. The last few days the sun didn’t come through at all. i love this weather You probably can’t understand that.
Yes, that is really difficult for me. What fascinates you so much about the gray sky?
This house is old and it’s cold. I love sitting in front of the fireplace in the evening. A dog, a cat, a book – it’s great to spend an evening like this. All I want to see is gloom and rain, but that won’t come back until winter at the earliest. I don’t mean that too seriously though. I grew up in the state of New York, where the climate is similar to that in Germany or Austria. I miss the changing of the seasons. I like what I don’t have.
Those who chose California instead of Europe are the Sussexes. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan live in your neighborhood. And all this on an estate you once wrote a book about, the River Rock Estate. How do you find that?
I don’t really care where people come from. I live in a democracy. I am the product of a democracy. My parents were uneducated, working class – and I’m here now. When Meghan and Harry moved here, a fan asked me the same question on Twitter. I wrote that I worked hard and still do to get where I am today. And what have the two done so far? This was followed by the correct answer, which I hadn’t come up with on my own.
