The demand for tickets for Taylor Swift’s concerts in Germany was huge – despite the high prices. Concert organizer Berthold Seliger has little understanding for the high costs.

Who has a ticket for the concerts of Taylor Swift was lucky to get hold of in Europe – luck that many others who didn’t get it weren’t. However, the successful fans also have to put a lot of money on the table to see their idol live.

Depending on the area, the tickets cost between 100 and 240 euros, for VIP tickets with standing room close to the stage and various merchandise, 640 euros were due. Far too much, says the experienced concert promoter Berthold Seliger. “Basically, everything that goes over 100 euros is a rip-off,” he told the Munich “Abendzeitung”. According to Seliger, who has been organizing tours for international stars in Germany with his agency for decades, Swift’s ticketing “is taking the whole concert business ad absurdum”.

Taylor Swift plays seven concerts in Germany

Swift will play seven concerts in Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Munich in July 2024. Fans had to register for the presale first, then a random selection was made. Almost three million people tried to get tickets in this way – in Germany alone. “The pop event of the year is no longer the concert, but the Taylor Swift presale organization,” criticizes Seliger.

He also has little understanding for the high ticket prices: “She’s a multimillionaire or even a billionaire – one expects that this will be the biggest tour of all time with ticket sales of over a billion dollars – so why can’t she offer cheaper tickets for 60 or 80 euros for standing room and thus treat the fans fairly?”

Ticketing methods are changing

Not only at Taylor Swift are the prices skyrocketing – concert tickets in general are becoming more and more expensive. Especially for appearances by megastars like Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen or Swift, prices are in the three-digit range. The organizers refer to the sharp increase in expenditure on production, personnel and energy. Ticketing methods are also changing. The ticket provider Ticketmaster in the USA starts prices for tickets depending on demand.
