Maintaining the value of used vehicles is a complicated matter. A car like this shouldn’t be too old to still be worth something. But when it gets really old, it becomes a collector’s item. But an Audi 100 Coupé S was something of a rarity right from the start. About 30,000 of them were only made between the late 1960s and the mid-1970s, with a new price of around 14,000 German marks back then. In this respect, the Coupé S, which is currently being offered for sale on various used car portals for 7,500 euros, would have remained quite stable in value, ignoring inflation for once. The offer is actually quite cheap for such a classic car. However, the car has also been lying at the bottom of the Pfreimdstausee near the Upper Palatinate town of Tännesberg for 40 years.
The car was discovered in the summer of 2022 during renovation work on the reservoir and recovered by police divers. The dealer is now offering it online for more than three times its alleged purchase price, but he also brought the Audi to North Rhine-Westphalia himself and has to take care of marketing it. It says on one of the portals that he would also ship the car, because the dealer himself sees a restoration of the thoroughly rusted car as “rather hopeless”. Further police investigations are probably similarly hopeless. But maybe now someone will reveal themselves when buying a used car.
