On her trip to Central America, Taiwan’s President Tsai wants to stay in the USA – a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, McCarthy, is also possible. China already feels provoked in advance.

If Tsai Ing-wen contacts Kevin McCarthy, it will be another provocation that will damage the one-China principle, violate China’s territorial integrity, and destroy peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, said the spokeswoman for China’s Bureau of Taiwan Affairs. Zhu Fenglian.

China is fighting back and will definitely take countermeasures, the spokeswoman threatened, without going into specifics.

After McCarthy’s predecessor Nancy Pelosi was in Taiwan over the summer, the Chinese military conducted large-scale maneuvers around the democratically ruled island.

The communist state and party leadership sees Taiwan as a separate part of the country and resists states that they see as having too close ties with Taiwan. The government in Beijing also regularly threatens war on Taiwan.

Background: China-Taiwan conflict

The dispute over Taiwan’s status goes back to the Chinese civil war, when the troops of the Chinese national Kuomintang fled to Taiwan after being defeated by the communists under Mao Tsetung. The communist People’s Republic was founded in Beijing in 1949, while Taiwan developed into a liberal democracy as the “Republic of China”.

However, Beijing regards the island as its own territory. With its one-China doctrine, Beijing demands that no country may maintain diplomatic or other official relations with the island republic if it wants to maintain normal relations with the People’s Republic.

Tsai: Neither yield nor provoke

Tsai Ing-wen said just before her departure at Taipei Airport: She is calm and confident, and will not back down or provoke. Taiwan will take the path of freedom and democracy and carry it out into the world. This road is bumpy, but Taiwan is not alone, said the Taiwanese President.

Tsai’s predecessor, Ma Ying-jeou, is visiting mainland China. When Ma was president, between 2008 and 2016, ties to China were much closer. In Taiwan, many are critical of Mas’ visit to China. The visit was welcomed in the People’s Republic and used by state propaganda as an instrument.
