Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel take the wrong course on Tirreno Adriatico

Warren Barguil (Team Arkéa Samsic) nicely won the fifth stage of Tirreno Adriatico on Friday. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), first and second in the general classification, probably enjoyed the day less.

Eight kilometers from the finish, the two men came out of the peloton on the counterattack, accompanied by the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). But their effort will not have been rewarded due to a misdirection. The three men who had to take a right turn continued straight and had to turn back.

In the Top 10 of the stage despite everything

In their defense, the plastic strip which had been installed in height, to mark the change of route, was not very visible. And the three members of the organization placed on the lower side, one with a red flag, were not very visible either. The dreams of returning to the heads of Pogacar, Evenepoel and Vingegaard thus flew away.

However, all three of them were able to finish in the Top 10 of the stage (Pogacar, 6th; Vingegaard, 7th and Evenepoel, 9th). And, in the general classification, the Slovenian double winner of the Tour de France and the young Belgian prodigy kept their place with the same gap (9 seconds).
