SZ Podcast: When the 1972 Olympic Games became a disaster – Munich

In Munich, 1972, Germany wanted to show itself to be cosmopolitan, colourful, cheerful. The Summer Olympics were supposed to be cheerful, very different from Hitler’s games in 1936. And at the beginning they are.

But then everything is changed when Palestinian terrorists take hostages – 11 Israeli athletes and a German policeman die. The police operation still raises questions today. And the act will change the Olympics forever.

In this first part of a double episode of “Das Thema”, SZ editors Roman Deininger and Joachim Mölter as well as Ankie Spitzer, who was married to one of the victims in 1972, talk about how. Part 2 will be released on September 7th, 2022.
