SZ podcast “To the point” – news from November 10th, 2021 – knowledge

The climate catastrophe can already be felt. And yet the 26th UN Climate Change Conference has so far only made few concrete decisions about the protection of the planet. Nice long-term goals and nothing else?

“Serious negotiations are being conducted here,” contradicts the President of the Federal Environment Agency Dirk Messner. The focus is on building a climate-neutral global economy. Basically, this is “a new narrative for the global economy, a new model” https://www.sueddeutsche.de/wissen/. “No country can resist climate neutrality,” says Messner. Even if the necessary investments are “by no means high enough”.

Germany and Europe, however, have to do more when it comes to international cooperation. “We will not achieve climate protection if we do not ensure social cohesion and justice at the same time.” That is also a mandate for the new coalition. “If we now have rising CO2 prices, then we can give a large part of the income back directly to the citizens,” says the head of Europe’s largest environmental agency.
