SZ podcast “To the point” – news from December 20, 2021 – health

The company party in a restaurant in Oslo at the end of November turned into a superspreader event. The guests actually did everything right: almost all of them had been vaccinated twice and all of them had done a rapid antigen test. But shortly after the party it was clear: 81 of the 117 celebrants had been infected with Corona. 66 of them with omicron. They were probably all infected by one person. She had just returned from South Africa two days before the party. And then apparently unsuspecting, because symptom-free, infected the others with the mutant. In the meantime, Omikron is leading to blatant case numbers in Great Britain and Denmark and is spreading at breakneck speed elsewhere.

“We know almost nothing and an incredible amount about this virus,” says the biologist and SZ science journalist Hanno Charisius. Basically, you’re watching the cognitive process live. In fact, “we don’t yet know how much more contagious this variant” is. One can assume, however, that people are “well protected from serious illnesses by two vaccinations”. “A third vaccination will surely add a little more to that.” However, even two vaccinations “hardly at all” offer protection against infection. Only contact restrictions would help.

Further news: Contact restrictions from December 28th, new vaccine Nuvaxovid, Joachim Nagel becomes new President of the Bundesbank.
