SZ podcast “To the point” – news from December 16, 2021 – knowledge

It has been almost a year since an adult was vaccinated against the coronavirus for the first time in Germany – and from this week there is now also vaccine for small children. After medical advice, all children from the age of five can be vaccinated with it. However, there is one thing that makes many parents hesitate: So far, Stiko has only recommended vaccination for this age group for previously ill children or those with close contact with high-risk patients. And that now confronts the parents with the decision: do I have my child vaccinated – or should I not?

The SZ corona expert Christina Berndt says: “I would be in favor of doing it.” She explains that although the Stiko is a little slow in its assessment, she firmly expects a future recommendation for all five to 12-year-olds. Five million children in this age group have already been vaccinated in the USA, and no problems are known from there. She also says: “The most important argument for me is that there is just a huge risk right now that a child will be infected.” Vaccination is preferable to infection in any case.
