SZ podcast “Munich personally”: with Inge Schäffner at the Gärtnerplatztheater – Munich

The Gärtnerplatztheater is one of the oldest and most beautiful cultural institutions in the city. Intendant Josef E. Köpplinger sees it as “an open musical theater that sets no limits to the freedom of art.” In order to enable this creative freedom at the highest level, hundreds of contributors are required. People who are never on stage and remain invisible to the audience. Inge Schäffner has been part of the Gärtnerplatztheater since 2007 and has one of the most important functions there: she heads the costume and make-up department. Only once a year, at the theater’s big costume sale, does she mingle with the visitors.

When it will take place this year and what criteria she is already using to select what is suitable, she explains when she visits her workplace. With the native Swabian we go into the belly of the theater, where the costumes are sewn and cared for, and some are also stored. Schäffner reveals, among other things, how she and her colleagues deal with the vinyl costumes of the newly staged “Bird Dealer”, what connects them with King Ludwig II and what has already gone wrong. She also explains why she doesn’t want to do another job and why she gets up at 4:30 almost every day.

For the Munich editorial podcast, Ulrike Heidenreich and René Hofmann, the heads of the Munich, Region and Bavaria department as well as people editor Sabine Buchwald and social editor Jana Jöbstl meet alternately with different guests. They pick you up at your place of residence or work, or they arrange to meet at special places in the city for a conversation.

It’s about current projects and very personal plans, about topics that move the city. The SZ podcast team invites people who have a connection to Munich. You live in the city or are visiting. They come from the areas of politics, gastronomy, culture, sport or media.
