SZ podcast: GDL railway strike: Weselsky is fighting for his legacy – economy

The strike by the train drivers’ union GDL will paralyze train traffic in Germany until Friday evening. For the GDL it is the third and longest industrial dispute to date in the ongoing collective bargaining dispute with the railway. According to GDL boss Claus Weselsky, an early end is not an option. To do this, the railway must first make a “substantial offer”.

Weselsky does have a point when he says “we have to improve the railway system, we have to get more out of this for the train drivers”. That’s what SZ political editor Benedikt Peters says, who accompanied Weselsky for several days for a report. The train drivers have “a stressful everyday life, difficult shifts, they have to earn more money so that more people come to the train”. On the other hand, the GDL boss represents “definitely questionable methods” and ultimately he is also concerned with his own legacy.

Both sides would have to move. After all, at some point the GDL’s strike fund will be empty. On the other hand, according to estimates, the railway has to cope with “economic damage of up to 100 million euros per day”. Peters: “They have to approach each other somehow.”
