SZ health forum on the topic of obesity – health

A new drug has been available for a few months now that has been proven to help you lose weight. Thanks to influencers and celebrities, but also through aggressive marketing by the manufacturer, “the weight loss syringe” quickly gained great popularity.

  • But for whom is the medicine, which is sold under the name Wegovy and contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, as a diabetes medication that has been available for five years, really useful and helpful?
  • Can and should you use it if you just want to lose a few kilos?
  • What are the side effects?
  • And can it replace other treatments such as stomach reductions if you are severely overweight?

The SZ Health Forum is dedicated to these and other questions about overweight and obesity Monday, December 11th from 7:30 p.m in a public online event. In a conversation with SZ science editor Christina Berndt, experts also answer questions from viewers. Participation is free, a registration for the live stream is required.

The discussion guests are:

Matthias Blüher: The head of the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolism, Obesity and Vascular Research at the University of Leipzig and at the University Hospital Leipzig is an expert in the metabolism of excess weight.

Beate Herbig: The head physician at the Obesity Clinic at Bielefeld Hospital has more than 20 years of experience with stomach reductions and gastric bypass operations.

Timo Müller: The acting director and head of the department for molecular pharmacology at the Institute for Diabetes and Obesity at the Helmholtz Center Munich is researching the role of hormones in obesity – and in losing weight.
