Almost 60 people have died within ten days in fighting between the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and pro-Turkish groups. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a correspondent for news agency AFP reported on Tuesday. It was the fiercest fighting in years.
The HTS group, led by the former Syrian branch of the al Qaeda terrorist network, has been gaining ground in areas under Turkish influence. According to the Observatory, which relies on a wide intelligence network in Syria, 28 HTS fighters, 20 members of pro-Turkish forces and 10 civilians were killed. Syria: Protests against HTS
The US Embassy in Syria said on Twitter that it was “alert” about the advance of the “terrorist” HTS. The US embassy called for the jihadist group to withdraw immediately from the region.
Since the HTS offensive, several hundred people have taken part in protest rallies against the group. This controls half of the province of Idlib, the last bastion of insurgents and jihadists in Syria. Almost 500,000 people have been killed in the war in Syria since 2011.
