A group of punks want to stay on Sylt until August 20th to draw attention to a “division in society”. The district had approved the protest action subject to conditions.
The punks have returned to the island of Sylt (Nordfriesland district). Around 30 participants in a registered protest camp pitched their tents in Tinnum near the airport on Monday. For almost four weeks they want to point out a supposed “division in society” under the motto “Sylt for everyone”. “Housing should be a fundamental right,” said co-organizer Jonas, “and not made impossible by the fact that some people buy a big villa for two or three nice weeks in the summer.” Social justice and climate justice, the fight against racism and right-wing extremism are also topics that the participants want to focus on.
Three mobile toilets as an edition
The district had approved the protest action subject to conditions. This includes mobile toilets – one for every 15 people. This is currently fulfilled with three dixie toilets. According to the conditions, the event is limited to a maximum of 300 camping people. Midday rest is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and night rest from 10 p.m. In addition, no dangers to public safety may emanate from the assembly. This affects, among other things, disruptions to activities in the immediate vicinity, it said.
Rathausplatz for punks now taboo
Last year, the camp in the center of Westerland caused a lot of unrest on the island – also because the nine-euro ticket introduced at the time caused more than 100 punks to camp on the town hall square. Residents and holidaymakers complained about noise pollution and pollution. Eventually, the camp was evacuated following a court order to that effect. Since the spring of this year, the sound and light installation “Meeresrauschen” has been set up at the town hall. A renewed tent camp of punks has become impossible at this point.
