National coach Bernd Berkhahn has confidence in his Magdeburg protégé Florian Wellbrock after his two medals in the pool competitions in the open water competitions.

Wellbrock won the bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest after finishing second in the 800m. There are less than 18 hours between the final in the pool and the start of the 4×1500 meter relay in the open water. The competitions start today in Lupa Lake.

“Of course we thought about it. Flo is the only one who has a background from the relay. We’ve thought of a tactic and hope that it will work against the strong Italians. They are favored, »said Berkhahn. Wellbrock swims with Oliver Klemet, Lea Boy and Leonie Beck. He will also be in the water over 5 kilometers on Monday and over 10 kilometers as the defending champion and Olympic champion on Wednesday.

Berkhahn praised the performance of the ten German pool swimmers who competed in Budapest, who achieved four medals and numerous final places and achieved their best result since 2009. «It was unbelievable. Especially the last day. All athletes who had not yet left were in the finals. I don’t know if that has ever happened in DSV,” said Berkhahn, emphasizing the unity of athletes, coaches and staff in these title fights. “The team and the mood were great,” said the national coach.
