Swimming still prohibited on a beach, a week after the arrival of oil pollution

For two of the three beaches of Menton (Alpes-Maritimes) closed since last Sunday and the discovery of hydrocarbon pollution, the lights have returned to green. They can reopen. That of Gorbio will still remain “prohibited for swimming, the quality of the water not having returned to normal”, indicates the municipality this Friday.

Traces of “surface iridescence and some solid residues in suspension” had been observed “over a length of 300 meters” and only “20 meters from the edge” last Sunday from 3 p.m., had indicated the prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes. For health security reasons, the town hall had quickly signed a decree of “temporary ban on swimming and nautical activities”.

The origin of this pollution remains undetermined. The town hall of Menton has decided to file a complaint against X. According to her, it could be “at first sight”, “discharges at sea” carried out by a boat. A wild degassing arrived on the coast.
