Swabia: brown bear sighted in Oberallgäu – Bavaria

After a brown bear was sighted several times in Upper Bavaria, a brown bear has now also been detected in the south-eastern district of Oberallgäu. The animal was photographed on Monday and pictures were sent to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. According to the company, the review was completed there during the day.

Individualization based on a photo or stamp is not possible, they say. The bear retreated as soon as it was sighted. Authorities, interest groups and representatives of livestock farmers have been informed.

Recently, traces of brown bears had been sighted again and again in Bavaria or animals had been captured by a photo trap, including in Berchtesgadener Land. In April, the authorities reported paw prints by a bear in the snow in the Rosenheim and Miesbach districts. Then dead sheep were found on an alpine pasture in the Rosenheim district, which had been attacked by a bear.

The State Office for the Environment recommended livestock farmers in the regions to bring their cattle into stables at night and to take herd protection measures. Residents and tourists should be vigilant and cautious when engaging in outdoor activities. Hikers should not leave leftovers or rubbish in nature.
