In the eastern federal states, but also nationwide, the AfD continues to increase in polls. The Green Prime Minister in Baden-Württemberg sees this as a fatal consequence of the non-stop argument at the traffic light.

Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann sees the public dispute between the traffic light coalition as a key reason for the nationwide strengthening of the AfD. “A coalition that just keeps arguing – that has fatal consequences,” said the Green politician on Tuesday in Stuttgart when asked how he explained the record figures for right-wing populists in polls.

The most fatal consequence is that people no longer notice what the government is actually doing, said Kretschmann. “That’s certainly a reason for the dissatisfaction – to be constantly public to the extent that it’s happening there.”

But that is not the only reason. The process takes place all over Europe and the world, he said to the strengthening of the right-wing populists. The development worries him. According to the head of government, democracy has proven to be more fragile than was believed for decades.

In Thuringia and Saxony, the AfD was in first place in the most recent polls, in Brandenburg it was at a similar level to the CDU and SPD. In these three countries are 2024 state elections. In the federal government, too, the AfD is currently experiencing a survey soaring with values of 17 to 20 percent – the Union is at 27 to 30 percent.
