In the German shipbuilding industry, 1,500 permanent jobs were cut in the past year. And the downsizing could continue, according to a survey by IG Metall.

Shipbuilding in Germany continues to head towards difficult times. According to a works council survey presented on Tuesday on behalf of IG Metall Coast, every third shipyard is expected to have further job cuts in the next twelve months.

In the past year, around 1,500 permanent jobs were already lost. That corresponds to a decrease of 8.1 percent. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was particularly badly affected, where almost a quarter (23.2 percent) of all core jobs in the shipyards had been cut.

According to the survey by the Agency for Structural and Personnel Development (AgS), the downsizing would have been far more drastic without state aid. Almost half of all shipyard employees were affected by short-time working in the past twelve months. According to the information, 43 companies with almost 17,000 employees were included in the 31st shipbuilding survey.
