Favorite meets surprise – that’s how Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur sum up wins in the supporting actor category.

The most important Oscar categories, which are traditionally announced quite early, include the awards for “Best Supporting Actress” and “Best Supporting Actor”. The 94th Academy Night opened with the first of these two categories. Ariana DeBose (31) stole the golden boy for her part of Anita in “West Side Story”. She had already been recognized for this role at the Golden Globes earlier this year.

With her triumph, the 31-year-old left Kirsten Dunst (39, “The Power of the Dog”), Jessie Buckley (32, “Woman in the Dark”), Judi Dench (87, “Belfast”) and Aunjanue Ellis (53, ” King Richard”) behind.

Tight race for men

DeBose’s Oscar win was to be expected – same game for men? Here Kodi Smit-McPhee (25) had previously received the Golden Globe for “The Power of the Dog”. But he was left behind at the Oscars – instead, the deaf actor Troy Kotsur (53) received the golden boy for his touching performance in “CODA”. His speech was the first emotional highlight of the event.

Ciarán Hinds (69, “Belfast”), Jesse Plemons (33, “The Power of the Dog”) and JK Simmons (67, “Being the Ricardos”) were also nominated in this category.
