Summer holidays are in Lower Saxony, Bremen and Saxony-Anhalt. That also means: long traffic jams on the freeways. There was already a lot going on on the A1 and A7 on Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon there were traffic jams several kilometers long on the A1 and A7. On the A1 Bremen in the direction of Lübeck, for example, traffic between Maschener Kreuz and Dreieck Norderelbe temporarily stopped at eight kilometers. On the A7 Hanover in the direction of Flensburg, there was also nine kilometers of traffic congestion between the Hamburg-Südwest triangle and the Elbe tunnel. Motorists needed about three quarters of an hour longer here.
Traffic jams also expected on Sunday
Holger Heuer from the traffic management center in Lower Saxony expected traffic jams due to construction sites, especially on Autobahn 1 between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg, as he said before the weekend. There is still a threat of standstill on the Autobahn 7 between Hildesheim and the state border with Hesse – also due to construction work. Because of the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia, you have to expect a lot of traffic and waiting times on the A31 towards the Lower Saxony North Sea coast, says Heuer. The General German Automobile Club (ADAC) is also expecting numerous traffic jams in all directions this weekend: Sunday afternoon is also expected to be particularly crowded.
Long traffic jams on Friday – especially on the A7
Already on Friday afternoon there were several kilometers of traffic jams on the A1 and A7. On the A7 Hamburg in the direction of Hanover, it temporarily stopped at 14 kilometers between Soltau-Ost and Dorfmark. Motorists had to plan about an hour more here. In the direction of Flensburg, it also backed up on the A7 between Hamburg-Marmstorf and the Elbe tunnel over a length of twelve kilometers. On the A1 Bremen in the direction of Lübeck, traffic was slow for twelve kilometers between the Maschener Kreuz and Dreieck Norderelbe.

Additional truck driving ban should relieve
According to ADAC, the level of traffic jams could be the same as last year even be exceeded. “Even at Easter and Pentecost there was a lot more going on on the roads than in 2022 or before,” said an ADAC traffic expert. Accordingly, there were 38,351 traffic jams on the weekends of the 2022 summer holidays counted in Germany. And this year too, travelers will have to expect longer travel times, especially on the access roads to the mountains, to the lakes and to the coasts. The ADAC is hoping for at least some relief from the additional truck holiday driving ban, which applies every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of August.
