The top of the Green Group wants to strengthen rural areas

The Greens attach great importance to rural areas. That is why these areas should now be given more support. What could that look like?
“That’s why the power of rural areas with their small communities and medium-sized cities deserves more visibility – and support for services of general interest, infrastructure and social participation.”
Power of the country in rural areas
The draft, in which numerous measures decided by the traffic light government are described, was available to the German Press Agency. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported about it first. The paper is entitled “With the power of the land: living and doing business in rural areas.”
Half of Germany’s economic output is generated in rural areas, “here lies the strength of the country,” says the paper. With renewable energies and climate protection, numbers could be in the black. With business models designed for sustainability and new sources of income, economic power can grow.
In order for rural regions to remain at home for people or to become new homes, “reliable, sustainable mobility offers, good health care, analog and digital infrastructure and opportunities for cooperation are needed,” the Greens demand.
Funding for rural development
Green party leader Britta Haßelmann called for reliable support for rural areas. “In order for individual initiative and strength to develop fully in rural areas, however, reliable framework conditions are required.”
Federal subsidies for rural development, such as the joint task for improving agricultural structures, would have to be retained and increased in the future, as agreed between the coalition partners.
The draft states that for decades it has been experienced that regions in Germany have literally been detached from public transport because rail routes have been closed and bus services have been thinned out.
Against this background, it is demanded: “The pact planned by the federal, state and local authorities for the expansion and modernization of public transport for the current election period must not be postponed further and further if future-proof financing of bus and rail transport is to succeed.”
