Election candidate and wife found dismembered in car

The heavy toll symbolizes the level of violence which is shaking the country and of which politicians are regularly victims. Four people, including a candidate for local elections on June 2 and his wife, were found dismembered in a burned vehicle in Acalpulcoon Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, local sources said.

The victim was identified by Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI, former dominant party). According to the PRI, this is Anibal Zuniga Cortes, candidate for a mandate in the municipality of Coyuca de Benítez. The candidate and his wife “were cowardly assassinated”, denounced the PRI section in Guerrero in a press release.

Two other bodies were found in the burned vehicle. The prosecution has opened an investigation into the murder of the four people.

Very important elections on June 2

Already, Thursday evening, in Chiapas (south), a candidate was assassinated after a meeting. Lucero Lopez Maza was a candidate for mayor of Concordia. Five other people also died. From September 23 to May 1, at least 26 candidates were assassinated during the campaign for the June 2 elections.

On that day, Mexico will hold the most important elections in its history: presidency, Congress, Senate, nine states out of 32, and a myriad of local elections. In total more than 20,000 mandates to be filled.
