Despite the pandemic-related restrictions, the expansion with high-speed fiber optics is increasing significantly, according to a study. More people could make use of the faster Internet connection in the future.

According to experts, the expansion of the Internet with high-speed fiber optics in Germany is picking up speed.

An estimated 7.5 million pure fiber optic connections will be operational by the end of the year, according to a study published on Thursday by Dialog Consult on behalf of the telecommunications industry association VATM. Last year there were only 5.4 million. “That is a considerable increase,” said study author Torsten Gerpott. “Despite the corona restrictions, massive construction has taken place.”

It’s about “Fiber to the Home” (FTTH) or “Fiber to the Building” (FTTH) – that is, fiber optics that is also on the last stretch to the apartment or at least to the residential building. This type of internet connection is said to be particularly fast and stable, but it is quite expensive. According to the study, only a third of the available fiber optic connections are activated – the residents do not use the others. Gerpott expects, however, that significantly more people will make use of the option of a fiber optic Internet contract in the future.
