Study: Gulf Stream is heading towards tipping point – knowledge

An important ocean current for Europe, which also includes the Gulf Stream, is weakening – so much that a tipping point is near, climate researchers led by René van Westen from the University of Utrecht write in the specialist journal Science Advances. If the tipping point is exceeded, the so-called Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could break off within a century and bring Europe an abrupt drop in temperature of a few degrees Celsius, in some places even by up to 20 degrees. “This is bad news for the climate system and humanity,” the authors write.
