Storms and thunderstorms: Severe storms in Mallorca

Status: 08/27/2023 5:33 p.m

A violent storm has swept across the Spanish island of Mallorca. The authorities called on the population and tourists to be careful. The storm is just a foretaste of the weather conditions to come.

There have been severe storms on Mallorca: heavy showers and storms with gusts of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour have swept across the island. On all the islands of the Balearic Islands there is an orange alert all day due to the weather conditions. That means a high risk. By early afternoon, more than 200 emergency calls had been received, said the Balearic emergency call.

The municipality of Palma was among those most affected. According to the port authority of the Balearic Islands, a cruise ship had broken loose there because of the strong winds. It then collided with a moored oil tanker. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Heavy storms and thunderstorms

Sailors are asked to take shelter in the harbor until further notice. The reservation of all buoy fields at sea is suspended until Tuesday. The emergency call center and the island government have called on the population and holidaymakers to exercise extreme caution.

The storm is a foretaste of autumn. It is a so-called drop of cold air: cold air masses reach the island from the north and meet the warm Mediterranean Sea there. The heat and humidity provide a lot of energy for thunderstorms, for example. Heavy storms, precipitation and thunderstorms can be the result.

With almost 30 degrees, the sea around Mallorca is extremely warm this year. Therefore, there is a risk that the drop of cold air will fall out particularly violently.
