Stewart Rhodes described his new project in pastels to his wife. He’s starting a free speech club, he told Tasha Adams in 2008 when he founded the “Oath Keepers” in response to the election of Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States. The keepers of the oath should become a civil rights movement like the well-known American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Rhodes said at the time, just not so left-wing. “We called it a libertarian take on the ACLU,” Adams says today.
