The tree broke through the roof of the house and a large branch landed in a bed where a child was sleeping. “It was probably relatively close. The child was extremely lucky,” said Lippke on Tuesday.

Firefighters and police officers were also called out several times in northern Thuringia because of fallen trees. Branches and trunks blocked roads in the Kyffhäuser district and the Nordhausen district. According to a police statement from Tuesday, there were no injuries there. Falling branches and objects caused damage to cars. In Mühlhausen, the storm blew a trampoline onto a parked vehicle.

Power outages and train diversions

In addition, due to the storm on Tuesday night, the power went out in several Thuringian households. A spokesman for the network operator said that 6,000 customers of Thüringer Energienetze GmbH were affected by the disruptions. According to the network operator, flying branches, falling trees and clashing lines caused the disruption.

As a result of the storm, ICE trains between Nuremberg and Erfurt were also diverted on Monday evening. According to Deutsche Bahn, the trains will be delayed by around 75 minutes.
