In Pakistan, heavy rains take a heavy toll: many deaths and injuries as well as devastating damage are the result.

In At least 26 people have died and more than 50 have been injured after unusually heavy rains in Pakistan. This was announced by civil protection authorities in the affected provinces.

In the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, near the Afghan border, 21 deaths have been reported in the past 48 hours. Five more deaths occurred in the southwestern province of Baluchistan.

On Wednesday, authorities in Baluchistan evacuated around ten thousand residents of a port city after heavy rain. The meteorological department spoke of unusually heavy rainfall for the time of year.

Pakistan has been experiencing an increase in extreme weather events for some time now. In 2022 there were record floods during the monsoon season, which temporarily flooded a third of the South Asian country. Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change, but has itself contributed little to global emissions.
