The Baltic Sea storm surge with a once-in-a-century flood in Flensburg caused enormous damage in Schleswig-Holstein. The state and municipalities are talking about 200 million euros and are planning a development fund.

After the severe Baltic Sea storm surge, the state and municipalities in Schleswig-Holstein have drawn on the basic principles of one Reconstruction fund of 200 million euros notified. “The wish is of course that the federal government contributes 100 million euros,” said Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) on Wednesday after joint discussions in Kiel. The state and local authorities are prepared to each cover half.

“That is an enormously large sum,” said Günther. In the area of tourist and municipal infrastructure alone, there is an estimated damage of almost 140 million euros. “In the area of coastal protection it is 40 million euros and for public services, including private ones such as daycare centers, for example, we have estimated another 20 million euros.”

The storm surge a good two weeks ago left a picture of devastation in some marinas, and there was sometimes massive damage to dikes and beaches. The city of Kiel alone expects damage to be in the double-digit million range. A woman died in the storm on Fehmarn after a tree hit her car.
