Brazil’s president speaks of one of the largest floods in the country’s history. A new legislative decree is intended to accelerate reconstruction.

With the heavy ones Floods in southern Brazil have brought the death toll to at least 90. There are also 361 injured and more than 100 missing, several media outlets reported, citing the South American country’s civil defense. More than 1.3 million people in 388 towns in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were affected by the flood.

Internet and telephone connections are still blocked in dozens of communities, and many connections are without power and people are without water. All flight operations have been suspended in the regional capital Porto Alegre. Pictures show flooding in waiting areas and even in the landing areas of aircraft. Civil defense warned of the risk of further flooding and landslides in certain areas.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who traveled to the affected area for the second time on Sunday and spoke of one of the worst floods in the country’s history, announced on Monday a draft legislative decree to speed up the reconstruction of the state. More than 46,000 lives have been saved so far.
