The new Corona variant Omikron has the stock market under control. After skeptical statements by Moderna boss Stephane Bancel about the effectiveness of the previous vaccines against Omikron, the nervousness of investors increased noticeably on Tuesday.

The Dax fell in early trading by 1.04 percent to 15,121.83 points. For the MDax it was down 0.58 percent to 33,855.36 points. The EuroStoxx 50, the leading barometer for the Eurozone, was 1.1 percent lower.

Bancel said in the “Financial Times” that existing vaccines are likely to have problems with the Omikron variant. It will probably take longer before adapted vaccines can be produced in sufficient quantities.

Positive economic data from China, where the government’s purchasing managers’ index for industry rose faster than expected in November, was pushed into the background by the news on Omikron.
