Triumphant advance for iPhones
Warentest checks smartphones – and gives Apple a landslide victory

Which smartphones are really worth it? Stiftung Warentest tries to answer this question again and again. In the current test, 18 current models were allowed to compete against each other – and a clear winner was chosen.
From cheap to premium, with simple notches to half a professional camera and then also thousands of models from hundreds of manufacturers: the selection on the smartphone market has never been as large as it is now. If you believe the Stiftung Warentest, there is above all one manufacturer who makes everyone else look old: Apple’s current iPhones grab all the top places in the recently published test of smartphones.
Of the 18 devices tested, the first three are clearly occupied by iPhones, only in fourth place do other manufacturers come into play – and have to share the rating with the fourth iPhone in the league. So far, one has seldom seen such a clear triumph for a manufacturer, even with goods test. Apple should be more than happy.
Clear winner
The undisputed first place goes to Apple’s top model, the iPhone 13 per max (tested here by us). Whether in terms of speed, display, battery or camera: Apple’s largest iPhone model in 6.7 inches is at the forefront everywhere. Warentest was particularly impressed by the notches: apart from the smaller sibling model, no other camera comes close to the consistently good to very good performance of Apple’s Pro cameras. The battery life of 52.5 hours is the second longest in the test, only the relatively long charging time of two hours prevents an even better result. But that’s not even necessary: With a rating of “good” (1.6), the Pro Max clearly takes first place. However, the fun is not cheap: With a price starting at 1250 euros, the test winner is also by far the most expensive smartphone in the test.
This is followed closely by Apple’s smaller sibling model, the iPhone 13 Pro. Except for the slightly smaller display diagonal of 6.2 inches, it is technically identical to the larger model, so it comes off the same in almost all test points, not surprisingly. The only exception is the battery: Because the housing is smaller, it only lasts 40 hours with the same amount of time on the stick socket. That costs Apple a double victory: With “good” (1.7), the smaller Pro model is runner-up. The price: from 1150 euros.
You can do it without a pro
If you do without the Pro in the name, you can save good money. Third place, that iPhone 13 According to the product test, it can keep up with the smaller Pro model in almost every respect. Only with the camera do you have to compromise because of the minimally inferior photo quality and the lack of a zoom lens. That was also evident in our test. Strange: Although the display of the Pro models is sharper and offers a faster refresh rate, the normal model is on par with the Pros in Warentest. The overall rating is only slightly worse at “good” (1.8), but the price is noticeably lower at 870 euros.
The only iPhone that didn’t make it onto the podium is even cheaper. The small iPhone 13 Mini in compact 5.4 inches is on par with the standard model except for the smaller case. As with the smaller Pro, however, this leads to less battery power: with 32.5 hours of runtime, it runs out noticeably faster. After all, it will be in 1.5 hours. However, it shares the overall rating of “good” (1.9) with two other devices. The price from 730 euros makes it the cheapest of this year’s iPhones, but it’s not a bargain.
Mid-range competitor
Things look different with the only Samsung model in the top 5: With a price starting at 340 euros, that is Galaxy A52s 5G a classic mid-range device – and still gets the same overall rating as the iPhone 13 Mini, which is more than twice as expensive. Although the camera, display and performance do not quite come close to Apple’s devices, the Android phone does not make any real mistakes. And thus positions itself as a price-performance tip.
