Steve Harwell is dying of liver failure. The ex-Smash Mouth singer is said to have just a few days to live.
Steve Harwell (56) is dying. The former Smash Mouth singer is said to have just a week to live. This was confirmed by a spokesman for the band to Entertainment Weekly. After being in a hospital for liver failure, Harwell is now at home. His family and friends have said goodbye to him in recent days.
heart disease, memory impairment and alcohol abuse
In 2021 Steve Harwell ended his musical career for health reasons. Zach Goode replaced him as Smash Mouth’s frontman. The singer was diagnosed with heart disease cardiomyopathy in 2013. In 2016 Steve Harwell collapsed at a concert due to heart problems and had to be taken to the hospital.
He is also said to have suffered from Wernicke’s encephalopathy. This brain disorder causes memory problems and disorientation. During an appearance in 2021, Harwell noticed his confused behavior and threatened the audience. After that last gig he retired as a singer.
Steve Harwell is said to have struggled with alcohol addiction over the years. In 2001 he suffered a severe stroke of fate. His son died of leukemia when he was six months old.
Smash Mouth formed in 1994. In the late 1990s, the rock band had a couple of hits with “Walking in the Sun” and “All Star.” The Californians were featured on the “Shrek” soundtrack with a cover version of “I’m a Believer”.
