There are books that one would like to praise only briefly, without long critical prayers. But in order for this to become a review, a few words have to be said. Words lost, unusually appropriate in such a case. So: Stephan Lohse’s little novel “The Humming Under the Skin” is perfect in its way. He can do exactly what he wants. It’s not a hugely sophisticated, language-bursting masterpiece, but rather tells a simple story in a simple way. Masterful in its own way. You get an idea of the author’s great skill when you think about what he left out for his purpose and how beautifully he tells and writes thanks to his brevity.
