The assassin from Halle, Stephan B., took two employees hostage in the Burg prison near Magdeburg on Monday evening. However, emergency services subsequently managed to free the hostages. The hostage-taker was injured. Franziska Weidinger (CDU), Justice Minister Saxony-Anhalt: “The prisoner temporarily took control of two prison officers in order to want to leave the prison premises under threat of using a crime that is still to be examined more closely.” It was not the first incident during the detention. In 2020 there was already an escape attempt in which the prisoner climbed over a fence almost three and a half meters high while walking in the yard. On October 9, 2019, 30-year-old Stephan B. tried to use guns to storm a synagogue in Halle on Yom Kippur, the most important Jewish holiday. He also threw incendiary and explosive devices and shot at the front door. However, he did not get to the grounds of the synagogue. He later shot dead a 40-year-old passer-by and a 20-year-old in a nearby kebab shop. The perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment with subsequent preventive detention in 2020. The judges found him guilty of two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. An early release after 15 years is thus almost impossible.
