Fathers spend more time with their children each day. But still significantly less than the mothers.

In 2022, fathers looked after children in their own household for an average of one hour and 19 minutes per day. Ten years ago, this value was 51 minutes, as the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden announced on Tuesday.

Despite the increase, fathers still spend significantly less time on childcare than mothers, as Destatis further explained: In 2022, mothers spent an average of two hours and 18 minutes per day on it – around an hour more than fathers.

When fathers dedicate themselves to their children, it is primarily to supervise them, whether indoors or outdoors (an average of 23 minutes), the statisticians explained. Another larger part of the time together between father and child is spent on sports and games (20 minutes). “In both areas, fathers also spend more time than mothers – not in minutes, but proportionally.” For mothers, on the other hand, personal hygiene, feeding and dressing the children make up the largest proportion of their childcare time.

The Federal Office looked at the care time for children under 18 in their own household. In addition to biological children, this also included stepchildren, adopted children and foster children. Children who did not or no longer lived in the same household were not taken into account.
