The red-red state government has passed the draft for a new electoral law. Voting at 16 should be possible no later than the next state election in early autumn 2026.

Young people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania could then vote for the state parliament. The SPD and the left have thus launched one of their core projects. Prime Minister Schwesig (SPD) said the project was a matter close to her heart. Vote at 16 strengthen young people’s participation.

Adopted by the state parliament by the end of the year

The new electoral law should be passed by the state parliament by the end of the year. In Schleswig-Holstein or Brandenburg voting is already compulsory at 16. But it should remain the same in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: only adults can run for a seat in the state parliament.
